Newly minted doctor Jane McGill is in hell.

Not literally, of course. But between her drug addict patients, sleepless nights on call, and battling wits with the sadistic yet charming Sexy Surgeon, Jane can't imagine an afterlife much worse than her first month of medical internship at County Hospital.

And then there's the devil herself Jane's senior resident, Dr. Alyssa Morgan. When Alyssa becomes absolutely hell-bent on making her new interns pay tenfold for the deadly sin of incompetence, Jane starts to worry that she may not make it through the year with her soul or her sanity still intact.

Even though I am a nurse of 33 years and not a doctor, I can completely related to the main character, Jane, in the story. It was almost exactly the same way in nursing school for me. I had an instructor from hell who could have been Alyssa's twin sister. Things like this really does exist in the medical profession. I can't tell you how bad I felt for Jane. I only wished I could have done what Jane did in the end, but I was too afraid of being kicked out of nursing school for insubordination.

All this being said, I really appreciated that a doctor wrote the story because the medical descriptions were correct. Years ago I almost quit reading medical stories not written by medical professionals because so many times what they wrote was so inaccurate and misleading. Maybe if you aren't in the medial profession and don't know the difference, it wouldn't make any difference in the story. But for me it would make me cringe.

Jane is correct in the story where she feels that nurses don't always like the interns/residents on call. But it is usually the arrogant ones that we didn't like--the ones who felt like they knew it all weather they did or not and whereas always right even when wrong. A good doctor/nurse team will learn from each other about their patients, especially when one on the team has a lot more experience than the other--plus, nurses are with the patients a lot more than with the doctors and see things that the doctors might not see. Then again there are interns/residents that we had more respect for than the attending doctor because the intern/resident did all the scut work and stayed on top of things more than the doctors did.

I know, this story is about doctors and not about nurses, so I will just say that in my years of observation this story told it like it really is. It is one thing to be tough on the people below you, but it is entirely different to be obnoxious and brutal--and that is how Alyssa treated Jane. There is a little romance in this story but the story is not focused on the romance, it stays focused on the medical side. When did interns have much time for romance anyway?

I really enjoyed this story, it took me back to my days in medicine and brought home to me how much I really miss it (am retired now). I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys medical stories but especially recommended to other medical professionals who could really relate to this story. I did.

The Devil Wears Scrubs A Short Comedic Novel (Audible Audio Edition) Freida McFadden Gabra Zackman Tantor Audio Books Reviews

A very funny story told from the perspective of a young, inexperienced doctor. Fascinating to see how they have to hit the floor running, endure and navigate through the stresses of the hospital, and keep their brains functioning on absolutely no sleep, few breaks, little nutrition at all !!! It doesn't hurt, of course, having a calm, attractive surgeon on your side. But I still would NOT want to be a doctor. Lots of guffaws and moves at a nice fast pace.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. The title doesn't give a lot away.
I'll tell you what I found. A story that will catch you from the first page and hold you.
You get to follow through with a medical intern as they "earn their stripes" on the way to becoming a doctor.
As a retired nurse, I can tell you it's about as close as you can get to actually being their. Each year, the hospital would get a new batch of interns, and the cycle would begin again. The accuracy of this story is almost scary true.
I loved Jane (and the 60 other names Dr. Weston called her). I sympathized with her each time she got chewed out by her Resident Intern.
I applauded her caring, her heart, and at the end, her determination to be different.
There is a Dr. Sexy Surgeon in almost every setting (not always sexy, fyi) but the humor bouncing around kept the story lively and the serious issues kept it grounded.
The roommate for Jane was hilarious. I wanted to stuff her in that organically clean toilet.
A story I enjoyed very much.
The author writes well and with humor. My beef with the book is that it didn't square with my experience. Granted, I was an intern 40 years ago, but I was also attending at a medical school for 20 years. I never saw such nastiness between residents and interns, especially outside of surgical training programs. She seems to indicate that Alyssa was based on a real character, but my experience in training and after was that residents and interns realize they have to help each other and antagonism is just going to make the experience more miserable for everyone. Our call was much worse. We had 1 Sunday per month off and never got to go home until 5PM the day after night call. Government regulations have changed that for the better. If her resident was as bad as Alyssa, I really feel sorry for her. The other thing that was jarring was her attack on Alyssa for missing a pneumothorax on a CXR. She should have know that you never accuse another doctor of killing a patient, especially on attending rounds. If you had a concern, you would take it up with the attending privately and let him handle it.

The book we read in my day and one that I did find realistic is "House of God." The relationship between the Fat Man and his interns is more typical than the one between Alyssa and Jane.
Medical shows have always brought romance and pathos, drama and death. This one brings a gritty realism, as a new intern struggles through her first year, with its triumphs and losses, friendships and sorrows. Is the resident a teacher or a torturer? Can you perform effectively for 30 hour shifts, living on junk food and hope? And is this even what she wants or her mother's dream? I really liked this book. Characters are fully developed and realistic, their struggles gripping, and their flaws oh so human
